Yorkshire Day

Flat caps and whippets at the ready – it’s nearly time for Yorkshire Day!

As a proud Yorkshire-based organisation, it’s one of our favourite days of the year, as it gives us all the opportunity to celebrate our favourite region, from its enthralling history and breathtaking scenery, to its dry sense of humour and enormous range of brilliant independent businesses.

But what exactly is Yorkshire Day and how should you be celebrating? We have some thoughts…

What is Yorkshire Day?

Taking place annually on August 1st, Yorkshire Day was first celebrated in Beverley by the Yorkshire Ridings Society in 1975 as a protest movement against the local government reorganisation of 1974. Today, Yorkshire Day is a day to promote all that is great and good about the place we call home.

How should you celebrate?

While there are no rules about how to celebrate, the day is typically enjoyed across the region by a wide range of light-hearted celebrations, while a civic gathering of lord mayors, mayors and other civic heads also takes place.

For residents of our newest developments in Brafferton and Bagby – plus those who will soon call our upcoming development in Church Fenton home – there are plenty of unique Yorkshire businesses in the surrounding areas to visit, giving them the opportunity to experience some fabulous Yorkshire landscapes while also enjoying some of the region’s finest produce.

Here are our top picks:

Brafferton

Home to our Manor Gardens development, the tranquil village of Brafferton is located just six miles from the popular market town of Easingwold and one of Yorkshire’s top-rated bakeries, Mrs Biggles!

Offering delicious homemade bakes, barista-quality coffee, afternoon tea and lots more, Mrs Biggles is the perfect place to stop for a rest and a few snacks after taking in the local area’s traditional, cobbled market square and vibrant greenery this Yorkshire Day.

Bagby

Nestled a mere three miles away from our Monk’s Court development in Bagby is The Pantry, a cafe/tearoom of which the whole county can be proud!

Open for breakfast, lunch and light bites, with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options, The Pantry is full of charm and extremely competitive prices – something every true Yorkshireperson is sure to appreciate!

Throw in its proximity to some of Yorkshire’s most popular cycling routes, the Monk Park Farm attraction and the Thirsk Hall Sculpture Garden and it’s not hard to see why a trip to The Pantry should be on everyone’s ‘to-do’ list come the 1st of August!

Church Fenton

For some, Yorkshire Day wouldn’t be complete without a trip to their favourite pub for a pint of their favourite local beer and a Yorkshire pudding or two.

If you fall into that category, you probably already know that Yorkshire is home to some of the UK’s best pubs… like The Crooked Billet in Tadcaster, just a stone’s throw from our upcoming Swann Gate development in Church Fenton!

A dog-friendly and incredibly popular traditional country pub run by friendly staff, The Crooked Billet serves up classic British pub-grub that’s cooked to perfection and bolstered by an impressive wine list and selection of guest ales, many of which hail from breweries within the region.

Oh, and don’t forget the famous Pudding Challenges! A choice of two three-course meals, all of which feature a Yorkshire pudding as its centrepiece, this is not for the faint-hearted or those with small appetites. But if you’re brave enough to tackle a giant pud filled with gravy and meat, then wash it down with another pud filled with ice cream, this is the place for you this Yorkshire Day – just remember to book ahead!
